About Lottery
A lottery is a form of gambling where participants wager a small sum of money for the chance to win a large sum of money. Some lotteries raise money for good causes.
First Known Use of Lottery
The practice of making decisions by casting lots is recorded in many ancient documents and is reflected in the Bible, including in Numbers 26:55–56. It is thought that the Chinese Han dynasty used lottery slips as early as 205 BC to fund government projects, such as the Great Wall.
In Western countries, the lottery has been popular since at least the fifteenth century. In the United States, state governments own and control lotteries, which use the profits to pay for public services.
Revenues from lottery games tend to expand initially, then level off and start to decline. This is called “boredom” and has led to the introduction of new games to maintain or increase revenues.
Licensed Retailers
Lottery tickets can be purchased at retail locations authorized by the lottery commission in each state. These include grocery stores, convenience stores, and gas stations. Some lottery commissions also have websites that provide a listing of licensed retailers.
Legality of International Lottery Travel
Although most lottery tickets are available within a country, it is illegal to purchase them from outside of the country. However, some international lotteries allow tickets to be bought by people residing in the country.
Getting Started with the Lottery
